The Truth About "20,000mAh"
ChargeGrade was born from a simple frustration: The numbers on the box are almost always wrong.
If you buy a liter of milk, you get a liter. If you buy a 500ml soda, you get 500ml.
But if you buy a “20,000mAh” power bank, you almost never get 20,000mAh. Between voltage conversion losses (boosting 3.7V to 5V), cheap battery cells, and heat waste, consumers are often getting 30-40% less power than they paid for.
Most tech blogs just plug in a phone, say “it works,” and post an affiliate link.
We don’t do that.
The ChargeGrade Mission
We are an independent testing lab based in Singapore. Our goal is to build the internet’s most accurate database of portable power. We ignore the marketing hype and test the physics of the device itself.
We answer three simple questions for every product:
-
Is the capacity real? (Efficiency Audit)
-
Is the power clean? (Ripple & Noise Check)
-
Is it safe? (Thermal Throttling Stress Test)
Inside The Lab
We do not rely on manufacturer specs or simple USB multimeters. We utilize a suite of calibrated, industrial-grade validation instruments to ensure our data is repeatable and scientific.
-
Programmable DC Electronic Loads: Used to simulate real-world power draws. We perform full 0% to 100% discharge cycles at constant current (CC) and constant power (CP) to measure the actual Watt-Hours (Wh) delivered, exposing efficiency losses that marketing materials hide.
-
Precision Protocol Analyzers: Used to digitally handshake with the power bank to verify Fast Charging standards (PD 3.1, QC 5, PPS) and detect compatibility issues with specific devices like Samsung or Apple.
-
Oscilloscope & Ripple Detection: We monitor the voltage stability at the microsecond level to detect “dirty power” (voltage ripple) that can degrade your device’s battery health over time.
-
Thermal Profiling: We stress-test units at their maximum rated wattage while monitoring surface temperatures to identify units that overheat or throttle.
All tests are conducted in a climate-controlled environment at 25°C to ensure consistent thermal data.
Our Code of Ethics
Trust is our most valuable asset. To ensure our ChargeGrade™ scores are 100% objective:
-
We Buy Our Own Units: The vast majority of power banks on our Tier List were purchased by us at retail price. We get the same unit you get, not a “Golden Sample” hand-picked by a manufacturer.
-
Data Dictates the Grade: If a brand claims 100W output but the unit overheats and throttles to 45W in 5 minutes, it gets a lower score. No amount of money can change that.
-
No Sponsored Reviews: We do not accept payment in exchange for positive coverage.
How This Site is Funded
ChargeGrade is reader-supported. We do not clutter our site with annoying popup ads. Instead, we use affiliate links.
If you find our data useful and decide to buy a power bank through our “Check Price” buttons, we may earn a small commission from the retailer (like Amazon or Shopee) at no extra cost to you.
100% of this revenue goes back into the lab—buying the next batch of power banks, upgrading our probes, and keeping the lights on.
